The artwork I made represents 6 different molecules of human created gasses that are emitted into the atmosphere, causing climate change. The gasses and their sources are;
- Water Vapor (H2O): byproduct of combustion of fossil fuels
- Carbon dioxide (CO2): electricity production and transportation
- Methane (CH4): cattle, thawing of the tundra and garbage dumps
- Nitrous oxide (N2O): dentistry and fertilizer use
- Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6): electricity insulation and dual-pane windows
- Perfluorocarbons (PFCs): aluminum production and fast food packaging
Pictured above is a duplicate of my piece made for exhibition. It consists of 32 ceramic vessels. Each vessel represents one atom. Atoms are grouped to form molecules. The entire piece measures approximately 5′ x 7′ in area.
To construct the vessels, I made pots, then cut them in half – rejoining them ‘lip to lip’.
While still wet, I marked the vessel interiors with a letter that represented the particular atom. I drew concentric rings and then made impressions (dimples) illustrating the associated protons/electrons of each atom. Pictured above is carbon.
I took individual atoms and grouped them with others to form a unit that represents a molecule. Above is a carbon dioxide (CO2) molecule.
I took the entire piece to the desert and buried it… each molecule about 18” deep.
They are in a secret location on public land in California.
My aim is that they will be preserved as a record of human activities during our time.
